Our Iowa weather can often result in the need to make difficult decisions related to delaying or cancelling a school day. Weather-related decisions are always based on data and information we receive directly from the National Weather Service (NWS) - Quad Cities Weather Forecast Office. The decision making process is not a perfect science, but we always utilize the most accurate information available to make decisions in a timely manner so that families are informed and able to plan accordingly.
Snow & Ice Impact - A number of factors related to road conditions are considered such as; snow/ice cover, drifting, winds, county road maintenance efforts, and any other projected inclement weather that could affect road conditions before or during the school day. In rural areas the conditions of roads can vary significantly. If a bus driver determines that a road is unsafe to travel on, our drivers may contact individual families to make alternative arrangements to schedule a safe pick-up location.
Unusually Cold Temperature Impact - A wind chill warning (projections of -30 degree wind chill or colder) issued by the National Weather Service typically results in a late start or cancellation of a school day. When temperature projections reach -25 degrees, a late start announcement is highly likely. When wind chills projections remain colder than -25 degrees as late as 9am or later in the day, a cancellation is a consideration.
Weather-related decisions are always made in conjunction with the NWS and other school leaders within our Area Education Agency. We do our best to make decisions using the most recent and accurate data, while still communicating any changes to families as soon as possible. When severe inclement weather is imminent we will often announce a change the night before the day that will be impacted. When we make weather decisions on the day of the severe weather, we do our best to announce the change as close to 5:00 am as possible. If no changes are announced by 6:30 am, it is safe to assume we are following our normal start times for the day.
We thank you all in advance for remaining flexible as we navigate the balance between consistent academic days and the safety of students, staff, and families.
